This generation of kids will base most of their learning on technology. With tablets, computers, video games, and more, children can learn so much about the world around them with an app. It’s a little crazy, as I thought I grew up in the digital age, but technology has come a long way in the past five years. My toddler thinks that everything is a touch screen, and soon enough it seems that everything WILL be a touch screen!
I encourage her learning with technology because I know that this is the way of the future. Yes, my 3 year old has an iPod Touch, and was very close to getting an iPad, until I couldn’t justify getting her the same exact platform in a bigger screen.) We take her iPod Touch everywhere we go, and I don’t have to worry about overly expensive apps or her using my phone and draining the battery. Some people may say I let my child “play too many video games” but what they don’t see is that she is learning so much by playing. Since my daughter is only 3, she expects everything to interact WITH her. She doesn’t like toys that don’t talk back, and often gets frustrated when they don’t “understand” her.
She has a few “toys” that work with her iPod Touch, but they don’t necessarily need to be used in order for the app to work. And then we found out about iLearn ‘N’ Play iOS devices and toys by AppStart Learning. They currently have three toys that work with iOS devices: Learning Tablet, Adventure Explorer or Robbi. Each toy works together with the app to bring the toy to life! We received Robbi, which works with the iPhone or iPod Touch and downloaded the Numberbots app that works together with the device.
My toddler couldn’t wait to play with Robbi, and although he doesn’t necessarily interact with her, he does talk and offers fun mathematically driven games that not only keep her entertained but also teach her. Robbi connects to her iPod Touch with BlueTooth technology and all the buttons on the robot control a function on her iPod Touch. The technology behind this toy is high tech yet user friendly, and only takes minutes to set up!
Currently there are three toys available:
- iPad App: Letterbox for the Learning Tablet toy
- iPad or iPhone/iPod Touch App: Letter Explorer for the Adventure Explorer toy
- Either iPhone/iPod Touch App: Numberbots for the Robbi toy
Each year, AppStart Learning plans on rolling out new apps for each toy. You can find out more by visiting iLearn ‘N’ Play on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. Right now the apps are FREE and you have the opportunity to win one of their fun toys! Just leave a comment telling me which device you would love to own. Remember: not all toys work with all iOS devices, so please check the list above.

I believe it, Joshua! the iOS devices have really opened up a door of possibilities for various learning styles, and most of all, having fun while learning. As a teacher, I can’t tell you how important play is for learning. I’m so happy to hear your son has benefited!
