Thanks to Party City for providing party decor for our Luau!
When you ask a four year old what kind of birthday party they want, you will generally get an answer which includes one or many of their favorite characters. My daughter’s second birthday party was a Minnie Mouse themed party, her third was a Hello Kitty Birthday party, and her fourth was a total shock to me- a Luau Birthday party. She was watching Lilo and Stitch and decided she wanted to wear a hula skirt for her party, and so a Luau theme it was. The date we chose for her birthday party fell during the weekend after we planned on moving into our new home, but as the weather, contractors are often unpredictable and don’t do what they say. So, we had to postpone her party to two weeks later and we still had no backyard or home to have it in, so my parents graciously offered up their home. Okay, it wasn’t so graciously.. it was very hesitantly as they imagined a dozen tots running around with sticky fingers, and sugar rushes. To their surprise, our youngest guests were very mild mannered and everyone, children and adults, had an awesome time at our Luau!
Since we have been in limbo with our new home and not sure at first whether or not the party would take place in a backyard oasis in the ‘burbs or a concrete jungle in the city, we had to be prepared for whatever location we would end up in. Party City is the place to find everything you need for a successful Luau, including grass skirts, table wear, decorations, and more. I’m not creative in the least, so when Party City helped us pick out everything we would need for the party, I was more than happy to run with their ideas! My favorite item was the giant Martini Glass which I thought was for my mommy time-out, but my husband brought it to my attention that for the sake of the party, we should stick candy and bubbles in it for the kids. Yeah, it worked, but the versatility of the huge martini glass means I can use it for ANY party, even if it’s for my own one-person party featuring a little bubbly and myself.
I love gumballs! They can brighten up a party and add to the table decor. Did I mention I LOVE the idea of a dessert table with candy centerpieces?
When it comes to the “extras” I always see them in the stores but don’t know what to do with them – Party City sent us two huge green bins which I imagine are to be used as ice buckets, but since we had an outdoor fridge to our disposal I was able to use the big green bins for party favors and the other bin for the lei and grass skirts. Speaking of grass skirts, the girls were in them from the start of the party until the indoor after-party:
Party City had a special Luau grass skirt set just for the party girl which included a pink grass skirt (because the party girl has to stand out) two floral bracelets, a fun shell bra, and a lei to match.
We had little serving bowls left over from our youngest daughter’s first birthday, and they were a perfect match with the current them, so we used them for the art table to store the arts and crafts:
Our serving table was impressive, but without pictures for some reason. The only shot I have from our table was the initial set up which shows our fun table cloth, dishes, cutlery, napkins, and cups – all from Party City! Due to our home renovation delays we didn’t have time to actually make food for the party so we catered in. We ordered food from our local Greek restaurant. Hot pink platters, also from Party City, were filled with Souvlaki, Gyro, Spinach Pies, and Pita Bread. I’m SO sorry I don’t have a picture of this, but maybe it’s better that way – I would make you all hungry!!
