Ever since I started understanding what triggers my migraines, I have been able to minimize and somewhat avoid them. Until recently. Although I can control what I eat, there are changes that affect my migraines that are beyond my control, such as the weather. I noticed this past month my migraines have increased on the days the humidity was high. After not having a migraine for a few months, I really believed I was in the clear, but this month I have learned that I’m not immune to migraines and I can still be affected by their debilitating side effects.
My migraine symptoms are throbbing, nausea, and sensitivity to lights and sounds. Having two kids under 4, I don’t have time to be affected by migraines. There is no time to sit on the couch hiding from the sun and shutting out the world. Dr. Keri Peterson, internist, shares that approximately 36 million people in the US suffer from migraines and 75% of the sufferers are women ages 18-35. Migraine triggers can be diet, water intake, weather changes, and menstrual cycle, as well as fatigue and stress.
June is national Migrane Awareness Month and you can keep track of your migraine symptoms and triggers by checking out the My Migraine Triggers App available on iTunes. The app allows you to track and record your triggers so you can share the information with your doctor and work on the best treatment with your doctor.

My oldest son was in the ER a couple weeks ago due to a compound migraine. It was really frightening–his speech was slurred, he had difficulty walking, and his vision was disturbed. I was scared to death, I thought he was having a stroke. We have purchased Excedrin Migraine for him to keep in his backpack, and he has a prescription for a more serious migraine.
