I think it depends on the movie and the child. The main thing I would be worried about would be the sound! Every time I go to the movies after a long hiatus, it just amazes me how loud the sound is! It even bothered my mother! I think your 3 year old did great!

I have a 6 year old and a 19 month old, both girls, and both so different personality wise. My oldest, we took to the movies starting at 4 since we were a bit worried how she’d do. She’s the mellow one compared to the youngest. I know the little one will need more time than the first, lol she can’t sit still and is so loud. They’re complete opposites.
