I don’t think an emergency trip to the doctor is suppose to be part of a cookie-making routine. I posted a few days back that I was planning on making holiday cookies with my toddler, and I went out and purchased a bunch of cookie cutters and fun sprinkles for our baking day. Yesterday was the special day and we prepared all morning. Once our dough was done chilling in the fridge, cookie magic was going to take place. My daughter had other thoughts. She cried THE ENTIRE TIME! In her defense, she really needed a nap, but this was quickly becoming a stressful situation. We rolled out the dough and made 3 batches of cookies and then disaster struck – she lost her balance on the chair she was sitting on and fell head first onto the granite (just so you know how hard it is) floor.
I panicked. Did she crack her skull? Will she have internal bleeding? Do we need to go to the emergency room? I didn’t know what to do first. I quickly scooped her up and grabbed the ice pack. As you can imagine, she was completely inconsolable. It was my fault. I shouldn’t have let her sit on the chair, I should have stopped the cookie making and taken her for a nap – maybe if she wasn’t so tired, she wouldn’t have fallen… My husband came upstairs and called the doctor since I wouldn’t be able to hear him over my daughter’s screaming. He wanted to see her immediately. Thankfully she was fine- her head was intact, there seemed to be no signs of internal bleeding, but the doctor told us to watch her for the next 48-72 hours.
I know all kids will fall and get hurt at some point or other. It is inevitable. But nothing can prepare you for that moment when it actually happens.

I’m sorry she took a fall, but I’m super glad she is okay!! We had a scary fall not too long ago too. 4 kids in and it never gets any easier! I’m going to share my blog post about it so you know you’re not alone and it happens! http://yourhandsinmine.wordpress.com/2011/09/22/no-more-blanket-swinging-in-this-house/

Thanks Brianne! I can imagine all the bumps and bruises you encounter with 4 kids!

Head injuries are the scariest. At least a scrape or cut you can see and bandage. I hope she is doing better today.

Thanks so much for your warm thoughts, Jackie! She is perfectly fine today – so nice when they get back up and act as if nothing happened!
