The kids wore me down. They wanted a dog. The husband wanted a dog. I was outnumbered, and despite the big fight I put up, Cocoa made his way into our home and our hearts. I was specific about what I was looking for in a dog (thinking my standards were well beyond what was possible and we wouldn’t have to get a dog.) The dog had to have short hair and not shed. The dog had to be a rescue and had to be good with kids. No more than 10 pounds, and not aggressive. After a long search, we found ourselves signing adoption papers for Cocoa.
Cocoa is a rescue, and he’s an older dog. We opted for a dog who has experience with kids, and he does. Being a Yorkie mix means that Cocoa doesn’t shed, and he’s pretty low maintenance, so far. Another issue I constantly brought up to my husband about not wanting to bring a dog into this house was the expense. I already had 3 kids to clothe and feed, adding a dog would take away from our monthly budget. My husband convinced me after walking the aisles of Dollar General where we realized the prices for Purina Dog Chow and dog accessories were well below what our local big box store was selling the same items for. The reason we decided on Purina Dog Chow for our new pup was the ingredients: Purina Dog Chow is made with real American-raised chicken and provides 23 essential vitamins and minerals, plus protein for strong muscles.
Cocoa is thriving in our home, and the kids are learning responsibilities. My oldest daughter is in charge of Cocoa’s food, my middle daughter is in charge of making sure Cocoa has water. My little guy is still young, but he’s in charge of making sure Cocoa is safe. We gave him this job because we thought he might be a little too rough with the little pup, and by giving him this job we find that he’s very gentle after we laid out our expectations of his role.

Purina Dog Chow has a special page on Dollar General where you can learn more about their products and special savings on their premium dog food. We put a huge emphasis on saving money wherever we can in this family because we teach our kids the importance of giving back wherever and whenever we can. We have family and friends in the military, and October/November are months where we give back the most. The kids in the community collect Halloween candy to send to veterans, and in November we participate in many service projects where we create care packages for local veterans. These small acts of kindness go a long way for our kids as well as those in need, and we maximize our budget to be able to help those in need.
Cocoa is everything I asked for in a dog, and Dollar General makes it possible to stay within our family’s monthly budget. Follow the conversation on social media with hashtag #DogChowDifference
