I never had a fear for the dentist the way other people did. I never had cavities or issues that needed any oral surgery until I was a little older. My dentist visits were always standard with an x-ray and a cleaning. It was not until I had to have my wisdom teeth removed that my fear for the dentist emerged.
You see, I had an infection from the impacted tooth, so Novacain was not sufficient to numb my pain. I felt EVERYTHING, from the tugging and pulling to the breaking of the tooth while it was still in my gum. My dentist did not use any type of sedation in his practice, and when I had to remove the next set of wisdom teeth, I was much wiser (pun intended) and chose another oral surgeon.
I had a much better experience with my second oral surgery. This surgeon used a semi-sedation method where I was awake but I did not feel a thing. As a matter of fact, I remember the entire experience but it was not traumatic, nor was it painful.
