Throughout school, I was always in top classes and honors classes. This all changed once I met my nemesis: math. I couldn’t be bad in math – my mom was a math teacher. My teachers would always make comments about my weakness in math and how it doesn’t make sense that I come from a math teacher, as themselves. The comments were embarrassing and as much as my mom would try to help me, I just didn’t get it.
The only tools I had available to me at the time were tutors and text books. There were no internet or computer programs for me to use. As a teacher myself, (no, not a math teacher) I know the importance of visual learning, and the methods that Sylvan Learning uses are mainly visual. Spoon-feeding information to people will not work for the majority of the population, but when people, mainly children, are able to animate word problems into a visual source, they are sure to learn a lot more than just taking notes and learning from a book.
I took the screener at Sylvan Learning myself and I was actually impressed at how my math skills have improved. My brain is finally able to handle math problems, but I sure wish I had a tool like this when I had to take algebra in summer school. I think parents should check out the screener if they have a child who is having difficulty in math. The screener will help the parents identify where the student is strong, and where their math skills are weak. After completing this assessment, it would be a lot easier to address your child’s problem areas.
I use to think: who needs math anyway? Now that I am older, I see that math is the basis of almost everything. Whether you are preparing a recipe, changing oil on your car, or you dabble in technology, you need to have a strong basis of mathematics skills. Did you know that 41% of children admit that algebra makes them nervous. This causes unnecessary stress and can be prevented when you have the right tools. Check out the Fit 4 Algebra screener today and help your child get a good start in the right direction!
