If you’re a Nintendo nerd like me then you can’t wait to get your hands on the new NES Classic Edition game console. I use the term “new” loosely because it’s a new system but features all the old classics Nintendo started off with. The NES Classic is a small console, fitting in my hand but packs a punch! With 30 classic titles there’s a whole lot of nostalgia in this small package!
I just know we all have our own favorite that we can’t wait to play. I started off with Super Mario Bros 3 but quickly jumped to Super Mario Bros and then was eager to hear the Dr Mario theme song. Castlevania was calling my name but then my kids wanted a turn so I pretended it stopped working and promised my new console I would be back as soon as they were tucked into bed.
It seems a little crazy that I can turn on the console and not have to blow into the cartridge to get it to work. It’s even crazier that I can save my game and go back to play it later. Do you remember those lazy Saturday’s you would keep your Nintendo on with the TV off to join the family for meals but didn’t want to lose your progress? Yeah- those days are gone!
Here’s a few things I didn’t like about the NES Classic console–
The cords are short. It’s impossible to keep a comfortable distance from the TV and in my case I have to look up to the tv because it’s mounted on the wall. The hand controllers are so nostalgic, you’ll wish they were cordless.
Remember when you would try to jump and you ended up in the hole and lost a life all because your controller didn’t respond as quick as you hit the button? Yeah- all of that. The controller is original and so is game play. I don’t mind, but the newer generation won’t know how to handle all this “backwards” technology.
Are the drawbacks enough to hold me back? Absolutely NOT. The NES Classic is an ode to my childhood and something lights up in me when I know I can share this with my kids. Just kidding, it’s all mine. They can have their other Nintendo consoles. This one is all for mama!
I would have loved to see Duck Hunt, Wizards and Warriors, and perhaps Tetris, but, baby steps!
For the nostalgic gamer in your life, the NES Classic is a hot item this holiday season. You can purchase yours from a variety of vendors including our affiliates at Amazon. The system retails at $59.99 and you can purchase an extra controller for less than $15.
