A lot of people understandably want to upgrade their kitchen for a multitude of reasons, like raising the value of their home, showing off their personality, just wanting to live in a pretty space, and yeah, they all make a lot of sense too. Honestly, some kitchen upgrades sound genius at first. You’re scrolling online, sipping your latte, and there it is: the quick-fix hack that’ll make your kitchen look like a magazine spread in a single afternoon.
Like, who wouldn’t want to try that out? Well, not all hacks are actually smart, basically, give it a year or two and those “smart” upgrades start to show their true colors… and it’s usually not pretty. So, here are the kitchen ideas that promise a lot but age pretty fast.
Matchy-Matchy Appliances
Oh, the catalog dream, right? Basically, every appliance in the same finish, lined up like little soldiers. It looks perfect on the page, but in real life? Well, chances are high that it won’t look as good. Okay, but why? Well, too much stainless steel and your kitchen feels less “welcome home” and more “employee break room.” It sounds weird, but it’s true, having too much of the same appearance can look off. Honestly, a little variety keeps things from looking stiff.
Peel-and-Stick Backsplashes
They’re the ultimate weekend brag. “I redid my backsplash in two hours!” Yeah, cool… until the edges start peeling, the color fades, and you realize you can’t even use them behind your gas stove without risking a meltdown. They’re fun for a hot minute, and honestly, there’s nothing bad about them, but they just were not built to last. You have to keep in mind, the back is adhesive, and that adhesive will eventually dry out over time (it’s no different for wallpaper either).
Open Shelving Everywhere
One or two shelves? Yeah, that’s totally fine, and honestly, it’s pretty cute too. Every wall turned into open shelving? That’s a nightmare in disguise. Sure, it’s a trend, but not all trends were built to last, and unless you live in a pottery catalog, your mismatched mugs and random Tupperware aren’t doing you any favors. Oh, and don’t forget about the dust. Oh, yes, the dust. You’ll spend more time wiping shelves than actually cooking.
While yes, this sounds and even looks cute, it’s not actually practical in reality. So instead of buying some floating shelves from your local IKEA and installing those over the weekend, you should ideally look into home remodelers and see what they can suggest and what they can do to help transform your kitchen. The last thing you need is impractical upgrades, and they’ll help outright avoid all of that.
Overhead Pot Racks
At first, it feels so clever. Your pans are right there, dangling in reach like a professional chef’s kitchen. But give it time, and that pot rack will make your space feel smaller, messier, and a little claustrophobic. Plus, there’s always that one tall guest who nearly leaves with a frying pan to the head. Not exactly the entertaining vibe you were going for.
But of course, if you have high ceilings, you can put it above a kitchen island, and don’t plan on using the pans much (because the bottoms get burned,) then it’s not a terrible idea.
