School hasn’t started in NYC yet but I’m already anticipating the long days of school work followed by hours of homework and reading. While I want my kids to be immersed in their studies and flex those brain muscles, I also think kids should be kids and need a time out from learning. What seems like mindless iPad-playing or TV-watching, I think their minds are taking a break and they are actually relaxing. While I would like to say I limit screen time, the truth is our schedule is more of what limits them. Between homework, dinner, and bathtime, there is rarely any more than 30-60 minutes of time they have to just sit. Their choices of shows are always interesting to me, as it is never what I think they will choose.
Netflix is our go-to for family shows. I love that we don’t have to worry about inappropriate commercials, and each girl has an account set up so their favorites always show up first. New to the Netflix lineup is Kazoops – a fun and vibrant show for preschoolers (although my 2nd grader loves watching it too!) We had a special media-viewing opportunity where my girls were one of the first to watch Kazoops on Netflix. We were introduced to Monty and his pet pig, Jimmy Jones and taken on an adventure in Monty’s imagination. I love the variety-style show which includes catchy music and a bright colors to spark the imagination. There is nothing impossible in the mind of a child, and Monty proves that. The twenty-minute show held my preschooler’s attention for the full time and she even asked to watch another episode. The full series will be available on Netflix starting today (9/2.)
While my girls generally choose what shows they love to watch, I know Kazoops is already a favorite on their list and something they will continue coming back to (because we ALL know kids love to watch the same thing over and over to nauseam.) Also be sure to check out their fun interactive website. On occasion I will let my girls take turns playing on my laptop and this is a fun website where they can play with the various toys in the Kazoops room.
