Discovery Girls Magazine Review and Giveaway

 It is very scary to have a daughter in today’s society with all the influences that are out there. The magazines that feature size 00 women and the TV shows that are on TV-Y14 can be pretty scary to a mom of a young girl. I am happy to say that Discovery Girls is a really great influence! The first thing I noticed when I received the magazines is that the tweens look like tweens – not like overdone young girls that are made to look like a twenty something model.


When I was a teen/tween I read Teen and Tiger Beat. This magazine is much better because it doesn’t encourage extra blush and lipstick, but there are very informative articles-like lip gloss actually can offer protection, not just fashion. It actually asks for input from the readers, which as a tween is not something that they get asked to do much – to voice their opinions in constructive ways. As a former middle school teacher, I know that most teens have two opinions – either something is “awesome” or “it sucks.”  I think this magazine could help revolutionize the way teens and tweens think about themselves. 

My favorite part of their website is the Role Model section, as well as the girls that are noteworthy – girls that are true to themselves. The girls that make the cover are  REAL girls, which I LOVE, because I don’t want my tween girl to fall into a body-dismorphia image and have doubts about how beautiful she is.  I want her to eat healthy and enjoy her childhood and not have to worry about weight and her looks.  Discovery Girls offers a lot of how tos that are tough as a mom to address-bullies, being a better friend, etc.
