In early January my husband suggested we go away for a few days to recover from the stress of the move, the hurricane, and the holidays. I was keeping an eye on some deals online and found an amazing hotel and airfare deal to South Florida. So, I checked with the babysitters (my parents) and booked a three night stay in South Beach, Miami!
My husband and I go out on date nights but it’s not enough time away from the kids to really relax and reconnect. We have 3 kids age 4 and under, and we have a hard time staying connected during our day-in day-out routine. I find that we take out our frustrations on each other and try to spare the kids! So, we landed in Florida before lunch and by early afternoon we were laughing, smiling, and gazing into each other’s eyes, which we haven’t done in……a LONG time!
The next day we went to the beach. It was overcast, (which was actually perfect) because we were able to spend the entire day at the beach relaxing, reading, and just enjoying each other. However, mommy mode kicked in when I saw a young family by the water. There was a mom, very engaged with her two kids who I’m guessing were both under three, laughing and playing with her two little cuties. And there was Daddy….sitting……IN THE STROLLER!!!!! I told my husband I was going to go over there and smack him. Come on man! Engage with your kids! Help you wife! I didn’t cause a scene but wanted to. Hubby even thought that was ridiculous.
Back to our vacation. We didn’t do anything extravagant or exotic. Just had some nice meals, a few drinks, and reminded ourselves why we fell in love with each other in the first place. Sure, we missed the kids (and I called home every few hours). But as my husband says, “we’ll stay married at least a few more years because we were able to spend a few days away from the kids”.

My hubby and I have not spent more than 24 hours away from our son… and then it’s only been a handful of times. My son is 10. We really need an all adult vacation. 🙂

how nice to get away like that. It’s definitely needed to remember who the two of you are. But wow, how crazy that that dad was just sitting there 🙁 so sad.
