When I brought my little girl home from the hospital, I really thought taking care of her would be a breeze. I have been around children all my life and felt comfortable holding, feeding, and changing her. Until she started crying and wouldn’t stop. I did everything I knew how to do – why is she STILL crying? She was breastfed, so my husband’s reaction was to stick a bottle in her mouth because “maybe she wasn’t getting enough food.” This made her cry worse! She screeched after a few sips and started vomiting. We tried pacifiers, soothing rubs, singing, and whatever else you could think of. At the end of the day, I would just hold my little girl and cry with her.
After speaking with her pediatrician, it turned out she had colic. She would go through the same cycle every day at the same time. Some call this the “witching hour.” Note to moms who are going through this: it doesn’t get any easier. My little girl is 2 and still has her witching hour. She doesn’t cry unconsolably for 4 hours, but after 6pm she becomes a different child – throwing tantrums, screaming, crying – all until she falls asleep.
I don’t know why children go through this, but it is very common. As my daughter got older, my hubby and I would take her for car rides to soothe her. We knew this couldn’t last forever, but it was all we could do to survive that period. It seemed that motion would soothe her, but her baby swing didn’t do much in the way of calming her down.
I didn’t hear of the Mamaroo until last year. It’s a swing/bouncer/car ride/soother, all in one. There are five motions to choose from, which is definitely more than your run of the mill swing can give you. Each baby is different and has different preferences, so from five motions, there is at least one that will soothe your baby. The Mamaroo is designed to move the way you do when you soothe your baby. I love the compact design, it sits lower than the swing we had, higher than the bouncer, and still fits in a small area (like a small NYC apartment.) Some other great features of the Mamaroo are the MP3 outlet, five nature sounds, multiple seat positions, and a removable/washable seat. I can’t say enough good things about the Mamaroo – it really is the ONLY piece of soothing equipment you will need when you bring home your baby. You won’t need a bouncer or swing. The Mamaroo is a great all in one solution for soothing your baby. You can find out more information and check out the variety of colors at 4moms.
