There are a few concerns moms have when they are making the decision as to whether or not cloth diapering is for them. I think the number one concern is how to clean them, and closely running up is how much does it actually cost. When my husband suggested we cloth diaper our little girl when I was pregnant with her, I told him absolutely not. I will not clean them and deal with the mess. I secretly looked into it soon after, mostly because I heard of cloth diapering services, and I realized that cloth diapering was not cheap to start up. Also, there are SO many diapers out there, how do you know which to choose? I couldn’t do it. She was being left with a nanny during the day and I couldn’t see this being a successful outcome.
Fast forward a year and a half later and I started to hear more people talk about cloth diapering. My daughter had a bad reaction to a big name brand diaper and we had to switch diapers a few times until we found one she didn’t react to. After speaking with a few cloth diapering friends, I decided to take the plunge and get some starter kits.
We have been cloth diapering for about 8 months now, and I am very happy with my decision to switch. Washing is not nearly as bad as I thought, and after trying a few diaper styles, I came across two that I like the most. The all in one diaper, and the pocket diaper. Initially I thought diapers with covers were great, but I found it easier to just change the entire diaper at once and not fuss with covers. Since my little girl was older when we started cloth diapering, we never had any issues with one size cloth diapers for her, which I hear don’t work too well with newborns (I have absolutely no experience with this, so I can’t comment.)
I recently had the opportunity to review a Diaper Rite Pocket Diaper from Diaper Junction and I found it to be very similar to other pocket diapers. Two things I love about Diaper Rite diapers is that they come with a small AND a large insert, so they really do grow with your baby, and that they are only around $10 each. In one day I can use about 6 diapers with my toddler. If I don’t want to do laundry everyday, about 12-15 diapers would be sufficient to get me started, making an entire set of Diaper Rite Pocket Diapers only about $150. This isn’t a bad start-up cost for cloth diapering. 1 box of disposables are about $40 and that would last about 3 weeks. In about 3 months, cloth diapers would have paid for themselves!
I found the Diaper Rite Pocket Diapers to be reliable. We didn’t have any leaks with them at all, they washed well, and they are very soft against my toddler’s sensitive skin. The diapers adjust to fit babies from 8-35 pounds. You can purchase Diaper Rite One Size Pocket Diapers at Diaper Junction and the more you buy, the cheaper they are!
