I was so excited when we moved to have a central heating and air system. I loved the idea of having a quiet unit and no baseboards or heaters taking up room in our home. Then it occurred to me- when one person gets sick in the house, we might all get sick because the air is circulated throughout the house. All vents lead to the main unit where the air gets redistributed. This can’t be a good thing!
Then my heating guy reassured me that as long as I use a good filter in my HVAC system, it should help trap germs and particles and keep them from spreading throughout the entire house. He also mentioned that during allergy season I should be able to find relief in my own home for the same reason. When I showed him the filters I had been using, which were the 3M Filtrete filters, he said those were perfect and the only ones he uses and recommends. He stated they were at a great price point for all they offered and came in a variety of sizes to fit just about every HVAC system he services. He recommended changing the filter every 3 months, although the previous owner of the house changed it every month. At this point we check it twice a month and if it looks like it needs changing, we change it. So far we have had our home for 5 months, but have only been living here for about 6 weeks. We’ve only had to change the filter once, which was right before we moved in, so based on my own experience I would say the filter would need to be changed every 3 months.
