It seems that allergies are getting worse for me and my family, so we are taking steps to keep the allergens low in our home.
When we initially renovated our apartment, we decided to pull up all the rugs and fix the hardwood floors. This ensured we wouldn’t have dust mites piling up within the carpeting and minimized the risk of allergies. In the dining room and the kid’s room, I put down two area rugs to minimize echoing and to protect the wood floor, but they seem to affect our allergies and will not be coming with us when we move.
Along with completely removing rugs, we also frequently wash the curtains and the sheets to make sure dust does not build up. Our new home is equipped with a central heating and cooling system which accommodates filters to clean the air that is coming out of the unit and through the vents. I love the idea of this, since the entire house will have improved air quality and can promote a healthy allergen free environment for me and my family. I can’t escape the allergens outdoors, but while I’m home I can make sure that my family is breathing clean air with Filtrete filters.
by 3M come in a variety of sizes and purposes, such as odor reduction, filters for individual air purifying units, and more. We use to have a smaller air purifying system that we kept in the girls’ room, but now can efficiently provide purified air throughout the entire home by using a filter in our central air system.
Some air filters need to be changed each month, while other units require a new filter after 3-4 months. This depends on the type of unit you have and the air quality in your home. We don’t have to change a filter thanks to having no central unit, we just wash ours out. But when we do replace our main unit I will definitely look into these.
