While we celebrated Independence Day just a few days ago, I thought it would be a great opportunity to hold a food drive for the Post Bowls of Hope, Champions for Kids. Our Fourth of July celebrations always include lots of friends, family, and food, so it was a great time to get everyone together for a great cause. Usually, around the holidays, I reach out to my friends and family and request donation items for our local woman’s and children’s shelter. It is out of the ordinary for us to organize something like this over the summer, but it was for a great cause. Often, when children are off for the summer, they miss out on breakfast and lunch that is provided to them during the school year. Having children home for the summer can stretch a family’s budget to the max, so we joined this cause to help provide food for these families.

This is a local woman’s shelter. I always thought it was a hotel. Once I found out it was a place for women and children, I knew they would be the place that I would give back to whenever we could.
Since I know that many of these moms in the shelter have younger children, I also decided to ask people to donate items such as outgrown (unused) diapers, wipes, feminine products, toiletries, and other personal care items since these are the products that this specific shelter requested. We got a lot more than we bargained for, when we brought out only 1 box for collection and left with 4 boxes of items! We will be dropping off the items later today to the shelter- What an amazing feeling. It is not our first time donating to this shelter. When I found out it was so close to my home, I felt that I could help out as often as we were able to.

We got a ton of personal care products. This is just one box of 4! They were loaded with diapers, wipes, formula, feminine care products, shampoos, body washes, lotions, and even lots of toys!
We asked our guests to bring dried goods and they brought pastas, rice, canned foods, soups, baby formula and crackers. Oh, and let’s not forget cereals! We donated two boxes of cereal and one of our guests dropped off an entire CASE of cereals! We were so amazed by everyone’s generosity and willingness to help out other families in the community.
