Nothing screams out summertime like a cool, refreshing watermelon. Did you know that watermelon also comes in a yellow variety? When I was younger and we would spend summers at the beach house, I remember my mother would get us a sweet yellow watermelon every once in a while. I think the last time I had a yellow watermelon was when I was about 8 years old.
I have been telling my hubby about this mystical yellow watermelon for years. I hadn’t seen it again, and he thought that maybe my memories were a little skewed. I knew for a fact that I had a yellow watermelon, and I could almost remember what it tasted like. It was slightly sweeter than the red watermelon variety.
Last week we took a trip to the supermarket and watermelon was on the list. As I walked up to the bins of watermelon to pick one out, I noticed the sign stated “Yellow Watermelon.” Could this be? I showed him the sign and he still didn’t quite believe me – after all, it looked just like a regular watermelon on the outside – this couldn’t be a yellow watermelon. I picked one out and hoped that there wasn’t some mix up. It had been decades since I last had this juicy treat and I would be crushed if I took it home and found out it was a red watermelon.
I rushed to get the rest of the items on my list, ran out the store, packed up the car, and was very excited on the way home. We got back home, unpacked the car, put the things away and I got ready to cut up my yellow watermelon. It was like a long lost friend I hadn’t seen in years. I put the knife in the watermelon with the expectation that I would find something red inside. Nope! It was yellow! My hubby stood over me and any doubt of this yellow watermelon escaped his mind – he told me he was surprised and “it looks weird.”
I took a sliver off and popped a piece in his mouth and my own. Yuck. This isn’t what I remembered. It was not as sweet as the red watermelon. It was not the same taste I remembered. BOOO! Now, I don’t know if this specific watermelon just wasn’t as sweet as it should have been, or maybe I just have a “skewed memory.”
Oh well, at least my hubby now believes that yellow watermelons DO exist!

I love reading your posts-I read them mostly from my emails or facebook and notice the facebook posts don’t always get posted on the website. I am even looking into how to get an app for your page for my phone so I don’t miss a chance to win one of your giveaways! Thanks again for sharing!

I have eaten yellow watermelon all of my life, and never do I remember one being sweeter than a red flesh melon. They are great, in that they don’t need any salt added to conflict the sweetness that you find in the red varieties.
