It’s been about a year since I heard of menstrual cups and I’m still not sure if they are a way of the future, or a fad. I’ve read that they are very popular in European countries and are growing rapidly in popularity here. I’ve asked a few of my friends what they thought of menstrual cups and not one of them had even heard of such a thing. It was time for an intervention! I had to call all of my closest girlfriends over to introduce them to Softcup. Since my baby is still breastfeeding, and my cycle has not returned, I haven’t had the chance to experience Softcup on my own. It was up to my friends to try it out for me and give me their honest feedback.
So, what is a menstrual cup, anyway?
A menstrual cup is a silicone “cup” that is worn internally during your menstrual cycle. It can be worn for up to 12 hours, and then disposed of after each use. There are menstrual cups that are reusable, but I like the idea of a disposable cup that is always clean and I don’t have to worry about washing it out each time.
Is it comfortable?
It is just as comfortable as tampons- you don’t even feel it once it is inserted properly. I have to say- there is definitely a learning curve- just like the first time you put contacts in your eyes!
The Verdict:
So, the girls came over and we chatted about “girl stuff.” I showed them a sample of the Instead Softcup and they were all interested but some were a little weary about the whole idea. The Softcup has a hard ring, which some thought may have been uncomfortable. I sent all the ladies home with their own box of Softcup and asked them to fill me in on the details of how well it worked, and whether or not Softcup was something they could see themselves using. One friend even commented how Softcup was SAFER to use than tampons, because there is no risk of toxic shock syndrome when using Softcup.
Within a week, I started getting feedback from my friends. Only two ladies were able to get it right on the first try, while everyone else had a hard time the first few times. Within two days of experimenting with Softcup, most of my friends who I sent home with Softcup samples agreed that they will be using them from now on. They stated that Softcup was comfortable and they didn’t feel it! A few others are still having difficulty with insertion, but just as anything else, practice makes perfect!
You can find out more by visiting Softcup, and by connecting with them on Facebook and Twitter. You can purchase Softcup at your local drugstore for about $9 for a pack of 14. Since you change Softcup every 12 hours, a pack of 14 should last through your entire flow.
