A few weeks ago I held an awesome playdate at my home with some of my closest mommy friends and relatives. The theme of the party? Oral health for babies. We all know how important it is to brush our teeth, but when it comes to babies, there are a lot of misconceptions as to when to start brushing, when to see a dentist, and even what type of toothpaste to use.
From the moment your baby is born, their mouths are entry ways for bacteria, even if they don’t have teeth. Ever had a baby with thrush? That is a yeast infection in the mouth. It isn’t pleasant for babies or nursing moms, but this is one of the first of many illnesses babies can get in their mouths. The best way to avoid thrush is to clean baby’s mouth with a damp cloth after each feeding. I always did this with my first baby and she never developed thrush, so I am definitely doing this with my second baby as well. Small steps we take everyday can ensure proper oral hygiene for our little ones.
At the MAM Smile Baby, Smile Party, we discussed things such as thrush in smaller babies, and when our pediatricians recommended we see dentists for our babies. Everyone had different opinions on the matter. Things such as “on their first birthday” or “when their first tooth appears” were all answers, and they are all acceptable! My toddler first went to the dentist when she turned two. This was at the suggestion of her pediatrician, and she was also a late teether. So, by 2 she had most of her teeth in and even got a clean bill of oral health from the dentist!
All the moms that came to the party walked away with a goodie bag full of oral care products for their little ones. From my favorite, the oral care rabbit- which is great to wet and freeze for a teething infant, to baby’s first toothbrush, and even money saving coupons for MAM products! All the moms were excited to try out their new products with their babies! We even played some fun oral hygiene trivia games and one lucky mom walked away with a goodie bag full of these products:
Everyone had an awesome time sharing information, stories, and learning new things! You can check out MAM Baby to find out more about their products. Be sure to connect with MAM on Facebook and Twitter to stay up to date on their latest news and promotions!
