In a world of iPads, iPhones, and iPods, our children are inundated with electronics. I’m not complaining, I was a techie kid myself and believe in the value of learning through electronic games and devices. Being that we are in a digital age, I think it is important for kids to understand how to work with and manipulate technology. Or, simply put- let them play games!
When I was growing up, we had a Sega Genesis, Nintendo, and eventually a Super Nintendo. My favorite games were always role-playing action games with Super Mario and similar characters. In fact, one of my all time favorite games was Yoshi’s Island. This was a game for Super Nintendo where you played as different Yoshis and had to take baby Mario back to his parents. My best friend would spend our weekends playing Yoshi’s Island, so when I showed her the New Yoshi’s Island for Nintendo 3DS, we both got very nostalgic over our favorite childhood video game.
Before I get into why Nintendo 3DS is so awesome, let me tell you a little about Yoshi’s New Island for Nintendo 3DS. Just like the original Yoshi’s Island for Super Nintendo, you play as Yoshi and the goal of the game is to return baby Mario back to his parents after the stork was ambushed by toadies. The journey Yoshi takes to get Mario back to his parents in Yoshi’s New Island includes mini games and board goals, which is exactly the same as Yoshi’s [old] Island. Game play is similar but the actual game is different, offering different boards and new ways to play, including the coveted 3D game play. I’m not sure who loves this game more, me or my almost 5 year old daughter, but sharing a piece of my childhood with her while playing Yoshi’s New Island is awesome.
Now, let’s get into whether or not you should get your child (or yourself) a Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo 3DS’ come in various models, including 3DS (super portability), 3D XL (larger screen), and 2DS (easier to hold). I received the 3DS to review, and while I have played it with the 3D function on, I prefer not to use it at all. It is easy to set parental controls for little ones since this mighty device can connect to the internet. Just like other devices these days, The Nintendo 3DS runs on apps and you can download games directly to your removable SD card, without having to worry about game cartridges. There are a ton of cool accessories out there, including colorful Stylus’ for Nintendo 3DS as well as carrying cases. The Nintendo 3DS is ultra portable and fits easy in your bag, making it perfect for travel!
The Nintendo 3DS comes in a variety of colors and there are even special character packs available which have fun designs right on the 3DS! Having two girlie girls, the Light Pink Metallic Nintendo 3DS was perfect for us! Stay tuned for more Nintendo 3DS game reviews coming up!

You must be much younger than I. There were no computer games when I was growing up. My kids, on the other hand, have had it all. I bet they would like this game.

Our daughter has had one of these since they first came out. She actually got it just so she could play the Zelda Ocarina of Time game, LOL. She really likes her 3DS and likes that she can play her regular DS cartridges on it as well.
