Our 7 Year Old’s Early Reading Journey

I was pretty impressed to find out my daughter was a top reader in her class. When she first started learning to read in kindergarten, she struggled. I didn’t know if it was because she had a substitute while her teacher was on maternity leave, or if reading just wouldn’t be her strong suit. It took me many years to learn that I had an issue with reading comprehension myself. I was an excellent reader, going through books with ease. Just don’t ask me what I read because while I could read the pages, the words and sentences just didn’t work their way to my brain. I fell between the cracks because overall I was a good student, as long as I didn’t have to answer reading responses. So, if my daughter had the same issue I would be on top of it and she would just need to work a little harder and take a little more time to read and understand.

Then midway through kindergarten something happened- she jumped up 4 reading levels and continued to progress each time she was assessed. By first grade she was on a third grade reading level. By second grad she was at the beginning of a 4th grade reading level. Her teacher admitted to me recently that while my 2nd grader has the ability to read past the level she’s currently on, the content of the next level of books is not age appropriate and may have situations that her brain isn’t mature enough to handle. Fair enough, but keeping her engaged in reading has been a chore despite how well she’s excelled. I tried opening up her world to books by setting up a reading area for her in my office. I set up a couch, threw on a fluffy blanket and some cute pillows and declared it her own reading space. She was excited. I even downloaded the kindle app on her iPad so she could choose some of the books that piqued her interest from the wide assortment of free prime books. She was engaged for the first 10 minutes. Then she was onto another app and watching videos. This wasn’t working.
