Girls Night In: The Light Between Oceans

My friends and I try to get together at least twice a month. Some months it may be more frequently and some may be not at all. We talk everyday and keep our bond strong by sharing our parenting joys and woes together. It’s nice to have amazing friends to go through this journey with. Last weekend we had an impromptu taco night at my house. What started off as definite plans the week before quickly became my forgotten plans. I had invited them all over with their kids and didn’t remember until the night before the event when my friend asked what she could bring. When I initially made these plans, Disney had asked us to host a get together to introduce “The Light Between Oceans” and sent over a box of goodies for everyone, including the book and the movie.

As my friends and their kids started piling in, they were instantly greeted with fluffy themed slippers, a soothing aromatic soy candle, warm tea, and horderves. The girls went off to play in the play room and the moms got to chat, catch up, and discuss what we already knew about the movie. All we knew was that it was on demand, but assumed it was a love story. Boy, were we in for a surprise.

The movie does start off as a love story between a couple but quickly transforms into heartache when our main character suffers two heart wrenching miscarriages. The couple lives on a secluded island where the husband keeps watch over the lighthouse. As Isabel mourns the loss of her second and advanced pregnancy, a boat washes ashore with a man and a baby, but the man isn’t alive and the baby is very young. Isabel longs to keep the baby while her husband states he has to abide by the law and report this activity. Isabel convinces her husband to keep the baby and 4 years pass until their lives take a huge turn. Fate brings the couple face to face with the baby’s real mother and a battle over the child ensues. When Disney provided tissues in our care package, we laughed it off. We were strong women. We don’t cry at movies! Boy, were we wrong! Watching the movie with two pregnant mamas brought about its own slew of emotions. We all know the bond between mother and child is unbreakable and we know how easy it is to fall in love with a newborn. Having a 4 year old myself, I can’t even begin to imagine how she would feel if her whole world was turned upside down and she was handed off to a new family she didn’t know. “The Light Between Oceans” is a love story like no other, between mother and child.
