When my oldest was just 18 months old I introduced the potty. I now know that I fell victim to the pressure from other moms who seemed to know it all, and as a first time parent I thought this was the best time to start. Well, my son went along with the typical time-line. I started having him sitting on the potty fully clothed, then in just a diaper, then diaper-less…..and the hours of just sitting and waiting while I read potty book after potty book. I also had the jar of jelly beans ready for any kind of elimination in the potty. So, long story short……(after lots of frustration on my part) one week before he turned 3 years old he told me that he wanted to wear underwear, and that was that…..he was potty trained. I wondered if I had wasted all that time during the past 18 months when he seemed to just decide one day and he had suddenly become potty trained.
When my second son was a toddler I decided I would wait much longer before starting to train him. He’s now 3 ½ and at this point I can’t even remember how old he was when I introduced the potty….but he was totally uninterested. I think he was over 2 but I’m not even positive. So, let’s just say that its been a long road. I think he just really likes his diapers. Either that or he’s incredibly lazy and diapers are just easy. I thought it would help to let him pick out his own underwear, but at the store he was totally distracted and more interested in the girls section. He wanted me to buy him the My Little Pony and Princess Sophia underwear. He already has a lot of pink clothing (but boy clothing that just happens to be pink) and I didn’t think I should let his first set of underwear be “panties”. I finally was able to convince him that Angry Birds was a good choice because they were mostly red (a popular girl color). So, he’s finally in underwear during the day but has accidents and doesn’t seem to care. He’ll just casually walk up to me and say, “Mommy…..I’m soaking wet”. Great.
On the day he started wearing underwear he wanted to wear it at night too. When my older son wore underwear at night he had accidents for about 10 nights in a row, and then very very rarely after that. Maybe 2 or 3 times in the past 2 years (at most). So, I was hoping for the same results this time around. Unfortunately, the younger one has an accident and doesn’t even wake up! I find him soaked in the morning and he doesn’t even want to get out of bed! I’ve never seen a kid so content to be sleeping in a bed soaked with his own pee! Ewwwwww! And who knows what time he peed????
So, do I insist he wear Pull-Ups at night until he starts getting out of bed when he has to go? Or wake up dry at least? I want to encourage his enthusiasm for the underwear, but I don’t want to wash sheets and blankets every day. Then we were at a Dr’s appointment and he had an accident right there on the floor. I decided it was time to put him back in pull-ups. Thankfully Huggies has introduced new designs based on the Monsters U characters. My son wasn’t so excited about taking potty breaks, but now I just say “What does a little monster take?”…”A Potty Break!” Its definitely helped overcome some of the obstacles of potty training and made the process easier and more fun!
Pull-Ups helps take the scare out of potty training by making it fun and easy with new Monsters U character training pants! You can help make potty training easier by staying consistent and using rituals like the potty break. Make it a game and ask your toddler, “What does a little monster take?”…“A Potty Break!”
and “like” Pull-Ups on Facebook for more potty training tips and resources.

You have to love potty training. We didn’t potty train either of our boys until 3 1/2 and I actually got a lot of flack for it. It was what worked for us though! It’s nice that there’s aids out there like Pull-ups and I love the designs on these, they are so cute!

Those pull-ups can be a lifesaver! I’m debating about trying to start my youngest now or not. He’s 23 months old but showing signs of readiness. Ugh … I just hate potty-training!

Mine wouldn’t do the little potty. I had to buy one of those family seats so she could use the regular toilet.
