Although yesterday’s forecast for today told us that there would be scattered thunderstorms throughout the city, I had a few things planned today for the family that couldn’t be changed. After checking the forecast again this morning, I decided to take the SmartShield Sunscreen bottle (which I received to review) with us.Usually on a day that is sunny and I know my little girl will be in the sun, I slather her with sunscreen before we leave the house. Today started off overcast – and we were going to be on a humid train, so I decided to wait until we arrived at our destination before putting sunscreen on her. (Even on an overcast day – UV rays can be very powerful, especially to a baby’s delicate skin.)
As we started walking across town to our second destination, The sun came out and was beating down on my little girl. Her umbrella stroller does not have a canopy, so I decided to put some sunscreen on her arms. Usually I opt for the SPF 50 or higher for her – because this is what her pediatrician recommended to us. I took a chance and applied the SmartShield SPF 30 since this is all I had on me. The first thing I noticed is that there is a very mild scent. Usually when I apply her other sunscreen, I smell it all day – even after I bathe her. I also noticed that SmartShield Sunscreen had a much thinner consistency than the other brand. I started to feel a little hesitant about this sunscreen – it didn’t seem like it provided as much of a barrier on her skin that I was use to. Within seconds the sunscreen was no longer visible on her skin.
We continued to walk across town with the sun directly on us. We completed all of the tasks for the day and I took a look at her arms where I applied the sunscreen. I was surprised that her arms were not red and splotchy, because usually with the other brand she breaks out in a rash. Maybe I should have thought of this sooner – but perhaps she is allergic to the other brand of sunscreen – or maybe the formula in the SmartShield sunscreen is better tolerated by her skin type.
