When you move into a new home, your mind can be more than occupied with unpacking, getting everything into the right place, and ensuring you’ve got all you need to cook dinner and brush your teeth before you go to bed!
And because of that, there are a few things that might get missed off of your new home checklist in the couple days after you move in.
In fact, we’ve got three incredibly important yet commonly forgotten jobs a new homeowner should do during this time. Check out our list below to ensure you’re not missing such crucial steps like these.
Your Security
The security of your new home should be your top priority. After all, you won’t know who else has a key, even if the estate agent has assured you it comes with new locks, and that’s something you should sort out on day one. Both your front and back door, as well as any side and/or window entrances, should have their locks changed.
You should also think about how dark the property is from the outside, and where more illumination or motion lighting should go. If you have any blindspots in your window vision, and you haven’t had a chance to get any cameras up yet, a temporary and battery operated motion sensor could be just the thing to rely on for the time being.
Your HVAC
How your home is both heated and cooled usually comes from the same place: a HVAC nestled somewhere in the heart of the property. As such, once you’re in the front door and all the boxes are down, find where your source of heating and cooling is and perform a visual inspection.
If you’re not an expert in HVAC maintenance, you won’t notice too much is off before you really put it to work, but giving it a once over will ensure nothing obvious can go wrong. Indeed, you’ll be able to double check if the filters are clean, or if it feels way too hot or cold to the touch.
And remember, if you suspect anything is wrong at all, try not to use it and call out a repair service as soon as you get the chance.
The Cleanliness
A new home is usually quite the clean place to be, but you can never be sure! Because of that, get the gloves out and put a bottle of antibacterial spray on your belt clip. You should also get the vacuum unpacked and have some microfiber clothes handy too.
Then, head round the house and give it a good wipe down – in any and all areas. The living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, and any other room you may have in the property. This is the only way to be sure you’re living in a truly clean and mostly germ free home, and that can grant some real peace of mind!
Don’t rest in your new home until you’ve gone over these potential issues!
