Last year my toddler did something seemingly funny- she walked into a concrete wall, knees first. Now, it was funny to my hubby because he always mocks that she is just as clumsy as her mama. It wasn’t so funny to me because even though she didn’t cry, she was left with a bloody knee. Now, if you remember being a kid, scraped up knees were just a part of growing up. Some may even say it’s a sign that your child is actually having fun. My toddler didn’t complain about any pain but the blood dripping down her leg told a different story. I searched in my bag to find something to clean her up with but I had NOTHING! How can a responsible mother leave the house without any first aid equipment- not even a bandaid? I was really annoyed at myself. If anything, I am generally over-prepared. Not this time- I ran to the drugstore, which thankfully was only a block away from the incident (thanks to living in NYC) and grabbed a bottle of antiseptic wash, a bag of cotton balls, a box of band aids and some antibacterial cream.
Minor accidents always happen, especially with toddlers, and even more so if they are clumsy like mine is! Now I know better and I am always prepared, even if I bring along a small bag and not an over-stuffed diaper bag.
