Have you ever taken a step back and watched your children play. It’s amazing, really. Watching them learn cause and effect, shape and color sorting, learning songs, and building relationships between objects. With my first daughter I was more hands on and played with her. She didn’t like to play alone and often asked me to play with her. With my second child, things we a bit different. She plays by herself, never asking for me to join her, so I get to watch how she learns.
Fostering creative play in children is important. This is how children learn about the world around them. I’m sure many people would disagree with me, but I also feel that certain television shows are also important. My oldest daughter has learned so much from watching her favorite shows. Last year, on her first day of preschool, I put on the television for my daughter to watch while I got myself and the baby together. As I was flipping through the channels, she asked me to stop on a brand new show, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. We had never heard of it, but she was into cats and tigers, so she was immediately intrigued. When I heard the familiar tune of the opening credits, I knew immediately that Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood was a spinoff from my own childhood favorite, Mister Roger’s Neighborhood.
I was impressed with the timing of the show. It was about Daniel’s First day of school and a lesson on how parents always come back to pick up their kids. This was perfect for us. It was her first day away from me, in a place she had never been. The reassuring message along with a fun song she sang all the way to school was a godsend that day. These are the types of messages you can expect to find in Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Each show is relevant to something going on in children’s everyday lives, from manners, to hygiene, and life lessons.
