If you were waiting on the edge of your seat for Wreck it Ralph to make its way to DVD/BluRay, then wait no longer! Wreck it Ralph is now available to watch in the comfort of your home! My toddler has seen many commercials and couldn’t wait to see a video game movie. She loves playing video games, so this is one movie she was able to relate to.
The story line is cute, but I’m not giving too much away in case you haven’t seen it. Let’s just say the bad guy turns good in this fun animated film. You can check out Wreck it Ralph Activities for fun ideas, and order your copy on Amazon!
Check out an interview with Sarah Silverman- the raunchy comedian who is the voice behind Venellope:
AN INTERVIEW WITH SARAH SILVERMAN FOR WRECK-IT RALPH
Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore take audiences on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in Wreck-It Ralph.
Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix, Jr. (voice of Jack McBrayer), the “good guy” star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades spent doing the same thing and seeing all the glory go to Felix,Ralph decides he’s tired of playing the role of a bad guy. He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero.
With the Blu-ray and DVD about to be released, we chat to Sarah Silverman – who provides the voice of a feisty misfit named Vanellope von Schweetz in the movie – to find out more…
Why did you sign up for Wreck-It Ralph?
I wanted to do this movie because I’m a huge fan of Disney. Seeing the script and learning about the character, I couldn’t believe what a gift I had been given. I know this girl, Vanellope von Schweetz, and I had a total handle on her – but I also fell in love with her. As soon as I saw the storyboards and the animatics, I felt this love and protection for her in my heart.
You have a lot of energy when you are working on stage. Does that energy hamper you in the sound booth on an animated project like this?
I didn’t feel hampered because I moved around in the sound booth. I still do everything I would do as if it was a live-action project, except I am wearing sweats and there’s a bun on top of my head. They are recording my voice, but I am working with my whole body when I’m in there.
What was it like to work with fellow actor John C. Reilly in the sound booth?
It was awesome. We got to record together, which was unique in animation like this because most of the time they record your voice on your own. To be able to look into each other’s eyes and improvise together was great. We were able to go in completely bizarre directions at times and that really helped our characters. It gave the dynamic between us a subtle nuance you wouldn’t get if we were working alone in the booth.
How much of the improvisation work made it into the final movie?
I don’t know exactly how much is in the movie, but there’s a lot. We were always thinking of alternative lines or different ways to say things – and they let us go off on completely different tangents. There are places in the movie where you see us going back and forth, and there is a sense of realness to it. The lines are a little too odd and nuanced to be something written in a script. Those are the improvised moments.
What inspired you the most in the sound booth?
Watching John C. Reilly record his voice was so much fun and it was very inspiring. You forget that you have to record the running and the sounds that your character makes when they gasp or sob. There are so many little, subtle noises that come out of our nose and mouth – and all of that has to be recorded. Those were the things that were most awkward for me, but watching John do them was hilarious and inspiring.
How did you get involved with the project?
When Disney approached me, I thought, ‘Really? You want Sarah Silverman?’ I was delighted because I’m a huge Disney fan, but I don’t think I would’ve ever predicted them reaching out to me. I’m so glad they did, though. The story of this movie is great and the characters are wonderful. I feel really connected to my character, Vanellope von Schweetz.
In what way do you feel connected to Vanellope?
Vanellope is this obnoxious, precocious, scrappy, tough kid. Like most tough kids, she’s a scared little girl underneath. She’s protecting something with that toughness. I think everybody can relate to that, especially when you’re young.
What were you like in school?
Predictably, I was the class clown. I think I was a very good student, mostly because I wanted my teachers to like me. I had to be liked. When it comes to cliques, I was on the periphery. I got along with all of the different cliques because I didn’t get too involved with any of them. I got by, but I’m glad it’s over.
How does it feel to be part of a Disney animation?
It’s awesome! Animation is always a long process, especially with Disney, but that’s why their movies are great. It’s not a mill. They take that time to constantly hone and re-think and tweak everything. The sketches and the story changed over time, but every change builds a layer of richness.
How has the look of your character evolved since you signed up for the project?
It’s been really cool to see Vanellope change over time. I think she had red hair in the beginning, but as the sketches changed, I saw her eyebrows become thicker and her hair turned black. I remember thinking, ‘Wow! It’s so cool to actually resemble this character.’ If I didn’t totally forget to have kids, maybe I would’ve had a daughter who looks just like her.
Where did you find the fun and feisty voice of Vanellope von Schweetz?
There was very little searching for that voice; it happened in a minute. I just looked at the character and she’s so scrappy, so I sped up my voice and gave her a permanent cold. That was it.
Do you like the way the animators dressed her?
Yes, I do. I love that they put her in a hoodie. I’m in my fancy jeans and blazer for these interviews today, but I love her hoodie. l also love her upside-down Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup skirt and all of the candy on her.
What is your favorite candy?
I love Sweet Tarts, I love Nerds Rope, I love Smarties, but on the chocolate side I love a Kit Kat, a Twix, a regular Hershey bar and Cadbury Eggs. Mmmm! I also love a Dove Bar. I would eat a Dove Bar every day if I could.
Wreck-It Ralph is set within the colorful world of video games. Did you have to tackle any gaming research for your role?
I didn’t do any research in terms of video games because these characters aren’t playing video games; they live within them. However, I’ve got a long relationship with certain games, especially GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64. I know every room in that game. I know the bathrooms; I know everywhere to look.
Were you a fan of arcades when you were a child?
There was an arcade near my house in New Hampshire where I grew up. My sisters and I used to spend whole evenings there when we were allowed. It was called Space Center, but the Dairy Queen also had a game called Joust that I mastered between dipped cones. Do you remember Joust? It was really hard, but I was obsessed with it.
Wreck-It Ralph is a comedy with heart, but what makes you laugh?
That’s a big question. There are so many great comedies right now, but I like how they are really mixing it up. When it comes to television, I watch Louie and there can be whole episodes where there are no jokes, except for his standup routine – and that can be very moving and very dramatic, and yet hilarious.
What comedians do you rate?
There are a lot of comedians that I think are brilliant. I don’t know if you’ve heard of Tig Notaro yet, but she will probably be a household name in the next year. She’s brilliant, she’s magical and I don’t think I’ve ever seen somebody get so many laughs with so few words. Chelsea Peretti, Jen Kirkman and Natasha Leggero are also great – as well as Louie, of course. There’s also a guy named Todd Glass who makes me cry with laughter. I’m really excited about the comedy that’s happening right now. I think it’s really a great time for comedy. It’s awesome.
I didn’t realize Sarah Silverman was in this! I’m going to have to check it out.
