I’m not big on prepackaged foods, but there are times when convenience overrules! My little girl can have her picky ways, and I have to get creative about getting healthy foods in her belly. Just recently I came across Earth’s Best frozen entrees at my local supermarket and I had to try them out. I found Mac n Cheese, Mini Cheese Bagel Bites, Mini Ravioli, and Whole Grain Pizza. The difference between frozen foods and canned foods is usually preservatives and sodium content. Frozen meals are much more nutritious and have less additives than those found in a can.
I gave my little one the option of which one she wanted to try first. Of course, with Elmo on the cover of most Earth’s Best frozen entrees, it isn’t a hard choice – “I want Elmo!” Well, that didn’t really narrow it down, so I tried her on the whole wheat pizza first. She loved it and I wasn’t surprised. She LOVES pizza. The Mini Cheese Bagel Bites weren’t an issue either. The real test was in the Mac n Cheese. She is very picky with her Mac n Cheese and I usually make it from scratch. She loves broccoli and carrots so half the meal was a sure thing – the real test was when she tried the Mac n Cheese. I can’t say she loved it, but she tolerated it well and ate most of it. Remember- she is a picky child! I tried the Mac n Cheese myself and I thought it was pretty good! She took well to the Ravioli as well!
I love that now I have choices when I drop her off at grandma’s house. Usually both of her grandmother’s will have lunch or dinner prepared for her, but since she is so picky, we always have a backup – just in case. These meals are also great for those days when my hubby has to make her lunch or dinner when I won’t be home. After reading the ingredient list, I can feel good about her eating these frozen “convenience” meals. There are no preservatives, pesticides, hormones, artificial colors or flavors. Just all natural ingredients that kids (and adults) love!
