One thing women think about when they are pregnant is how they are going to feed their baby. Breastmilk or formula, bottle or boob, organic or conventional. One thing I have learned from my daughter’s pediatrician is that just because something is generic, does not mean it isn’t top quality. For example, when my hubby and I decided to purchase a fever reducer/pain reliever for my daughter, my husband insisted that generic was not something he would consider, even if it was cheaper. A few months later, a leading brand in fever reducers was recalled. A few months after that, my daughter spiked a fever and her pediatrician recommended to stay away from the big name company and to go for a generic or store brand medicine.
Since my husband takes our pediatrician’s words seriously, he felt comfortable with the recommendation to choose a generic brand- until we found ourselves on a weekend getaway with our toddler who couldn’t choose a worse time to spike a fever. The only thing near us was a Walmart, so we ran in for a fever reducer. My husband didn’t want to get the Walmart brand, despite my argument that “this is what the doctor recommended.” The pharmacist noticed my husband and I confused in front of the children’s pain relievers and came over to speak with us. We told him what our predicament was and he told us that the medications were made by an outside manufacturer, which produced generic medicines for many stores, and these medicines were not made by Walmart. He also explained that they regardless of the price, the generic brands still went through the same rigorous testing that any other brand would go through. The funny thing is, the generic brands didn’t have an issue with recalls, while the big name brand had several recalls within a short time frame. Makes you wonder…
Although my babies were never formula fed, I always had a container of formula on hand just in case. I also had a freezer full of breastmilk, but I never wanted to be in a situation where my baby would be hungry and I didn’t have food for her. Generic formula was never a thought, but to be completely honest, I didn’t put much thought into formula anyway. So when I noticed the HUGE price difference in generic vs name brand formulas, I had to find out more. Were they the same? If generic medicines are okay, then formulas should be fine too… right?
Perrigo Nutritionals manufactures store brand baby formula, and is sold to many big name stores such as Walmart (Parent’s Choice) and Target (Up & Up). You may have noticed them next to the other, more expensive brands. I did some research and found that Perrigo Nutritionals is as nutritionally complete as those big name brands, but cost half the price! Also, the FDA sets out regulations on baby formula and ALL store brand formulas meet or exceed these regulations.
Perrigo Nutritionals is giving away a gift pack to one of my lucky readers! The Gift Pack contains
