I only used formula for a few days with my little girl, but I had researched a lot about formula brands before she was born just in case I had to supplement. Initially I was completely turned off by store brand formulas because I didn’t know enough about them. I didn’t know that ALL infant formulas, whether they are name brand or store brand had to go through the same rigorous testing and meat FDA requirements for safety, nutrition, and quality. I also learned that the reason why name brand formulas are so expensive is because they supply hospitals with samples and also provide free samples to moms upon request. This, along with advertising brings up their cost to nearly double what store brands formula would be.
Check out these interesting statistics:
- Baby-related advertisements strike an emotional chord with moms – nearly one in four feel overwhelmed (23%) and one in five feel anxious (20%) or confused (20%)
- 53% of moms admit thoughts of their baby product budget plague them on a daily basis
- 37% of moms feel guilty if they cannot afford a specific product for their babies
- Moms are willing to purchase store brand over the counter medicine for their baby (42%) and store brand pharmaceuticals (44%), but only 21% of moms are willing to buy store brand infant formula.

When you purchase store brand formula, it does not mean that the store actually made the formula – there is an outside company that is hired to produce the formula. I learned this from a Walmart pharmacist one evening when my little girl was running a fever while on vacation. The only store in site was a Walmart and since there was a recall on Tylenol brands, the only acetaminophen available was Walmart brand. The pharmacist explained that there are outside companies that produce the medicine and sell it to Walmart, who then slaps their label on the bottle and sells it at a discounted price. Interesting!
Getting back to infant formulas, there is one prominent company that manufactures formula for stores such as Walmart (Parent’s Choice), Target (Up & Up), Kroger (Comforts) and Sam’s Club (Simply Right.) Perrigo Nutritionals is the company that creates the formula and distributes to these store. They adhere to the highest quality standards, so you can feel confident that you have made a smart choice for your baby and save money for the family. I used the BJ’s brand formula for both my son and daughter after an hour long comparison of what was in the brand name vs what was in the BJ’s brand. The BJ’s brand was $20 and that lasted us an entire month, whereas the brand name was twice as much and not as large a container. Both brands had the exact same ingredients and honestly, I think the BJ’s brand had a few more vitamins that the brand name did not.
