My husband and I debated through the holidays over whether or not we were going to get a pet kitten for my toddler. She is beyond cat obsessed and we thought it would be a great way to start teaching her about responsibility. There were just a few problems with our plan. One, with a new baby in the family, a kitten would just add to the workload, needing to be fed, taking to the vet, and cared for. Two, the litter box. I naturally assumed that my husband would be the one to clean the litter box and take one for the team. I was very wrong, because he assumed I would be the one to take care of the kitten, the way I would take care of the kids. So, in the end we decided to wait a little longer until we agreed on a solution.
I had previously heard about automatic litter boxes from friends, but after checking them out I wasn’t too impressed with them. I was worried about cat waste becoming stuck in the mechanisms and either damaging the unit or needing some deep cleaning that I was not willing to do. Then we came across Hagen’s Catit SmartSift Litter Box. Hagen is a known and trusted brand in our home, because we have a large aquarium and many of the items we use in our aquarium are from Hagen. So, when Hagen came out with a self-cleaning litter box we had to check it out.
The SmartSift litter box is different from other automatic litter boxes that I have seen, in that it doesn’t require batteries. This litter box uses a man-powered lever that sifts and separates the soiled litter from the clean litter. It uses any clumping litter and there are carbon pads available for the SmartSift that helps eliminate odors, making it a great solution for avoiding a stinky litter box.
What I love most is that the litter is covered, keeping it out of reach from small children who may be curious about the contents. The large entrance is perfect for your cat, while also keeping your children out of the box. We still haven’t chosen a cat for my toddler, since we want to make sure any cat we choose would be a great fit for our family, but we are much more settled on the litter box “situation.” My husband has already told me he doesn’t mind cleaning the litter box with Hagen’s Catit Smart Sift Litter Box, and I will be holding him to that!

I’ve had kitty cat fever lately but hate the mess. This might be a good solution.
This looks like a great solution to kitty litter messes!
My sister’s cat Lily loves to kick litter around, so an enclosed box like this would be a great solution for them!
I have GOT to try this. I rescued 3 kittens last year and ended up keeping them all (I fell in love) but I had their litter box in my office and that is where it has stayed… I am LITERALLY having to scoop litter 3 and 4 times a DAY. I need help LOL
