I love living in NYC and being in the center of everything. This truly is the city that never sleeps, and you have so much at your fingertips at any hour of the day. After spending summers at the beach house, where there is no 24 hour shops around, we’ve realized how indispensable our local Duane Reade stores are. Most of them are open 24 hours, and they are usually fully stocked and have just what we are looking for, with many options to choose from. Since we don’t have big box stores in the city, a one stop drugstore is the perfect place to pick up everything we need: from simple meals to personal goods.
On a routine trip to Duane Reade to pick up necessities for the family, my husband asked the dreaded question: “What’s for lunch?” It’s been a bit chilly in NYC, and today it feels like its about 4 degrees, so the only thing I want is something warm. Perhaps soup? With a ton of housework to do today I really didn’t feel like cooking. I keep hearing the buzz about Malaysian Kitchen soups and how great they are, plus they don’t contain those nasty ingredients I try to keep away from my family, so today was the day we were going to try them!
From what I hear, there are three Malaysian Kitchen noodle soup varieties to choose from: Garlic Sesame, Lemongrass and Shitake Mushroom. I wanted to try the first two flavors, but I’m not too keen on the mushroom flavor, since I’m highly allergic to mushrooms. My hubby, on the other hand, loves mushrooms and since I don’t ever cook with them decided he wanted to try this flavor. I love that Malaysian Kitchen noodle bowls do not contain MSG, which is a known additive in any shelf food. There are no preservatives, trans-fat, or food coloring, so this meal is in line with our lifestyle of a chemical-free diet. The meals were easy to prepare, a simple boil of water and stir, and within minutes my soup was ready!
After the first bite, I was impressed. The noodle soup was light, warm, and comforting, without an overpowering salty taste that I have come to accept with pre-packaged foods. After finding out about the Malaysian brand, I was excited to hear that there will be a Malaysian Kitchen Winter Market over at Bryant Park on February 20 and 21! You can learn more by connecting with Malaysian Kitchen on Facebook and Twitter.

THat looks good. I’ll have to try them!
I’ve never seen those around our grocery stores. I’ll have to look for them next time and give ’em a try!
I love that it’s free of all the yucky chemicals and preservatives!
We don’t have those stores here…
No Duane Reade’s here — but I have to say those sure do look tasty!
Those look delicious.
too bad we don’t have a Duane Reade here 🙁 those noodles look like they’d be so yummy and I love how they package everything separately.
These would be great for lunch during the day!
I had never heard of that brand before. I will have to look for it next time I go grocery shopping. Thanks for sharing.
Wish we had one here. Never heard of that brand before, either.
Those noodle soups look yummy. During the summer we head to a beach house too without a lot nearby, but it’s so worth it!
i agree. I love how light this soup is. If I wanna dress it up more, I can choose to do that myself.
Shitake mushtoom noodle sound delish.
Sounds like the perfect lunch.
oh how I miss Duane Reade. This new yorker used to go there all the time.
I wish we had a Duane Reade in Miami. We just have Walgreens, CVS and Navarro!
I’ve never seen this brand before, I’ll have to keep my eyes out for it. Looks great.
Looks good!
We use Hylands and I love it! So cool that they carry so many helpful products.
i havent seen these around here.
Looks good.
I’ll admit it at first I didn’t think I was going to like the lemongrass but it’s my favorite!!!!
Wow! Love the preservative free aspect of them.
