It seems that there is a “month” for everything these days and September is Baby Safety month! Most parents don’t realize how unsafe their home is until something actually happens – for example, when we first moved in to our home, we invited our cousin over with her son – who pulled a mirror off the wall! Thankfully he did not get hurt, but it made us realize that maybe we needed to be more aware of safety in our home.
When my little girl began to crawl, we knew it was time to put up separation gates to close off the rooms. Also, when she started walking – it was very important to cover the oven handles because they were now in arms reach for her. Almost every decision we make now regarding our home is whether or not it is safe for our toddler.
Since we are living in an older home, our bathroom is actually still the same as it was built, decades ago. The tub is starting to lose some grip and we have to start thinking about anti-slip pads to use so that no one gets hurt. Munchkin just came out with their latest tub safety tools – the Grippy Dots. Each package contains 6 textured tub grips that help prevent slipping. You can place them inside or outside the tub, and even around the pool! One dot in each package feature White Hot technology that warns you if the water gets too hot.
There are not many toys I like for bath time because they retain moisture and eventually mold, so I was very picky with the toys I gave my daughter. My hubby insisted on getting her a rubber ducky, but I was reluctant since they all have a hole on the bottom that can bring in water. When we came across the Munchkin’s White Hot Safety Bath Ducky and it was a compromise for both of us – he got to get her the rubber ducky, and it had a closed bottom so that moisture could not creep in. What made this duck even better is that it features White Hot technology so you can test the water before you put baby in the tub.
The home isn’t the only place that you need to worry about baby safety. Harmful UV rays can hurt baby’s eyes – so be sure to use a window shade in the car to protect your little one! Munchkin White Hot Cling Shades are a good choice – they are flexible and cling directly on your car windows. These also feature that amazing White Hot technology that I previously told you about which tells you if the car is too hot for your child. Worried about using cling shades? These shades are reusable and can go from car to car.
Babyproofing to keep your child safe is important, but what about baby proofing FROM your child. A lot of baby items are not very “adult” friendly and can actually do damage. For example, When I was younger, I use to keep a car seat in my car for my niece. After a few months, I removed the car seat only to find that the leather in my car was damaged from the plastic of the car seat. I was a little bummed, but walked away from this experience with a lot more knowledge for “next time.” Now that I have a child of my own, I will not place her car seat in my car without a seat protector underneath it. I like the Munchkin Auto Seat protector because it not only protects your seats from the inevitable damage of the car seats, but it also has storage to keep toys neat.
What some baby proofing items you cannot live without?

I’m not sure how your blog works in terms of what you’re able to post about with a post like this, but I thought I’d share this with you… September is also Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and keeping your baby/child safe extends even further than just baby proofing. There are many places to learn the signs and symptoms but one of the easiest is through the free iPhone application called Be Child Cancer Aware. Information about the site and the application can be found here http://www.bechildcanceraware.org/campaign/i-phone-application/
