They say “necessity is the mother of invention” and this holds true to so many things, including recipes. Don’t you have days where you want something sweet and salty, but still want something healthy? This happens to me ALL.THE.TIME, and my kids are no strangers to odd cravings either. One of our favorite “created out of necessity” snacks has become a go-to after school or anytime dessert that I don’t feel guilty about feeding my kids. I take a banana and split it in half, then I add a spoonful of nut butter such as Almond or Sunbutter, then sprinkle with a few chopped chocolate morsels, m&ms or coconut flakes. This hits the spot every time and has some pretty good ingredients.
The kids love to get in on the action and I love how it promotes creativity, a love for trying new things, and we can talk about the different flavors. Being in the kitchen is such an educational experience for kids and something everyone should do at least once a week!
Check out some creations I’ve made in the kitchen with my oldest daughter. There’s Quinoa and Spinach with Shrimp, Funky Mac n Cheese with chopped carrots and pancetta, and homemade pizza (I know, not creative but definitely fun!) This is a great way to get kids to try new things!
There are some creative potato chip flavors out there, but I’m not sure if this recipe would make the cut. What do you think? Is it something you would like to see down the chip aisle at your local supermarket? The Lay’s “Do Us A Flavor” contest invites you to submit your ideas for the next great Lay’s potato chip. There’s even $1 million grand prize See rules here. Four finalists will be chosen and sold nationwide in 2014. The contest ends on April 5th, 2014.
