I was about 8 years old when I had my tonsils removed. Before that, I had 8 years of childhood illnesses that were treated with antibiotic after antibiotic. At some point, a pediatrician had me on antibiotics for 3 months for tonsillitis before my mother decided to go for a third opinion on having my tonsils removed.
Knowing what I do about antibiotics at this point in my life, I would love to pick this doctor’s brain on why he chose to keep me on meds for that long. He was the professional, I didn’t know any better, and my mom was the only advocate on my health. Why did he choose to mask the problem without finding a solution?
Now, don’t get me wrong. If someone has a bacterial infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics, then, by all means, TREAT IT! My question is, why are we treating out food with antibiotics? Wait, what did she said? Our food?
Yes, if you eat meat, then there is a good chance that it was treated with an antibiotic. Antibiotics are used to treat livestock because we have such a large demand for them that we are packing them into farms where they have no room to move. They get sick, just as we would if we packed 18 people into a 15 person capacity elevator. Germs spread fast.
Have you ever wondered why penicillin was able to treat EVERY illness when it was discovered and now can only treat simple illnesses? We have created super bugs with the over use of antibiotics and our bodies have grown so use to ingesting antibiotics, that they don’t work as well as they should. My husband and I have opted to feed our family only grass fed, hormone free and antibiotic free meats.
I wrote this post in response to the Healthy Child Healthy World program. I have just joined this program and will tell you more about it in the upcoming weeks!

Amen Sister! After watching the movie Food, Inc., my husband and I have been a lot more careful about the food we eat and the food we give our daughter.

I totally agree! We really do need to become more knowledgeable about what goes into our bodies!
