What are your plans for Mother’s Day this year? For us, we try to include everyone, my mom, my hubby’s mom, my girls, and myself. We really don’t do anything big, last year I had just come home from the hospital with our second daughter, so we hosted Mother’s Day in our home and had it catered in (because I was NOT about to cook!) The year before we visited each of our mother’s individually, and this year we are planning on doing the same.
I had one request for my husband this year when he asked me what I wanted to do for Mother’s Day. I told him I just want to spend time with the family, without our cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc. This isn’t easy for anyone in my family; my toddler is easily amused with her tablet, I always have emails to catch up on so I’m constantly looking at my phone, and my hubby is so addicted to reading the latest news on his phone. Oh, and let’s not forget wasting away all our time on Facebook! There is always a new photo to comment on or new status to like, but I promise, it will still be there tomorrow!
I was happy to hear that I’m not the only one that feels this way. MetLife has created the #SocialBlackout Movement which challenges people to log off from social media on Mother’s Day and give mom some attention. This Sunday, May 12th, I challenge YOU and your family to take a break from social media, and shut off your electronics to spend some unplugged quality time with the family.
You can find out more about MetLife’s #SocialBlackout Movement by visiting them on Facebook, but please, after you visit them on Facebook, LOG OFF and go spend some time with the kiddos or your mom!

We are so overly connected…computer, phone, tablet. It’s bad. This sounds like a very good idea!

The dinner table and scheduled family time are always #SocialBlackOut times for our family. I think it’s so important to give people attention and not be distracted by the tech gadgets.

My evenings are totally off the computer almost always. Weekends are typically walk-away times for me as well!

I’d like to black out several times per week!

We’ll be doing the blackout! Well, trying to anyway. We’ll see how it really goes. 🙂
Donna says
I can’t guarantee I’ll be totally on a #socialblackout, but I don’t “usually” spend a lot of time connected over the weekends…. especially in the summer. 🙂

I find that social media–when it’s not work related–makes me anxious. I hate the fact that my oldest cannot go 5 seconds without his phone in his hand, and I hate that my younger boys are always begging to use the Kindle, the computer or one of the grown up’s phones. I think a total blackout this Mother’s Day would be the perfect gift.

That’s a great idea, but I don’t think I can do it. My husband cannot go without his cell phone because he is essentially on-call 24/7/365. Essentially.
Maryann says
I will be doing that on Mothers Day.
Jennifer says
I definitely plan to unplug tomorrow!

Have fun! I just realized that I am going to have to plug in at the end of the day. sigh.
Theresa says
I am so doing this.
