You might remember quite a few posts back that I am a full believer in probiotics. It all started when I was at the end of my teen years and I was struck with horrible stomach problems. After I ate, I was in pain. Most foods bothered me, and within a year I was down to 110 pounds on my 5’6″ frame. I missed out on enjoying ice cream and dinner dates with my friends. In fact, I would opt to stay home than go out and have to face food, or worse, explaining why I couldn’t eat. At that age everyone assumes it’s a teenage eating disorder, but it was much worse than that because I had no control.
I went to doctors, many of them. No one could figure out what was wrong with me, and I figured this was just the way my stomach works, or doesn’t.. Then, one day my life changed. Well, it took more than one day, but here’s what happened: My mom’s coworker was telling her that she suffered from what doctors call IBS – Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and she found relief in probiotics. She was very specific about how the probiotics should be handled, and how much healthy bacteria they should contain. That’s where all our research came in, and we found something that sounded good based on her description. I’m no doctor, and my experience may differ from yours, but after a few weeks on probiotics, my belly woes started to subside. Within a few months I was able to maintain a healthier weight, and 10 years later I’m STILL taking my probiotics. With so many options out there, it is getting easier to find a formula that is shelf-stable and can survive the stomach acids to make it down to the intestines.
Just recently I had the opportunity to try out Align probiotic, and after my two week trial I feel that it performs just as well as other brands I love. It turns out that Align is a brand that doctors recommend! This is because it is the only brand that offer’s it’s main ingredient, Bifantis. There are many probiotics that are important in digestive health, but they don’t all work the same. Some probiotics never make it to your gastrointestinal tract. After my experience with Align, I feel that it is well made and does what it is suppose to do – keep my intestines in check and provide my body with a good dose of healthy bacteria! You can find Align at your local Duane Reade drugstore.

My daughter suffers from the same symptoms. We’ve assumed it’s been food related and, while she tested negative for gluten allergies, we though it could be lactose intolerance. She’s been off that for almost a year and is still dealing with stomach pain, cramps, and bloating. Maybe we’ll ask our doctor about probiotics for her.
