Let’s face it: there is a very small percentage of people who actually consume the proper amount of veggies and fruits each day. Personally, there are days when I may nosh on a few carrots, but then not have any vegetables the rest of the day – as for fruit, I am lucky if I eat 1 serving a day. I know how important it is to get in these vital nutrients, and I make sure my toddler gets at least two servings of fruits and veggies a day, but for myself, I have to work a little harder.
Since I was young, my mom always pushed vitamins on me. I was (and still am) a very picky eater. Even though my mom knew that the best way to get vitamins in me was through foods, she wanted to cover her bases and still gave me a vitamin. I do the same with my toddler, even though she is a much better eater than I ever was. I don’t think that vitamins should be solely relied on for nutrition, but I do think of them as an insurance policy. I noticed that since my toddler started taking multivitamins each day, she has had fewer illnesses and colds. Since I was pregnant with my daughter, I have been taking a prenatal vitamin as well as a probiotic supplement. I feel that both supplements aid in my overall health and well being, plus prevent that sluggish feeling I am prone to (probably due to my picky habits.)
