Shortly after we saw previews for Disney’s Zootopia, I knew I had to take my kids to see it. But what I really wanted to know was whether my almost 4 year old was a good age to take her. I asked around to see what’s a good age to take a child to the movie theater and most of my friends had already taken their children by the time they were 3. It all depends on the child and whether or not they can sit through a movie. We made it as fun as we could- a girl’s day out with just mama and her two daughters- ages 3 1/2 and 6. I made it as easy as possible for myself by using the Fandango app, which not only allowed me to purchase tickets, but I was also able to choose our seats. I didn’t have to worry about sitting too close or not finding 3 consecutive seats so close to opening day.
My girls are Disney fanatics, so I knew they would love Zootopia. What I didn’t anticipate was the intensity of the sound on my 3 year old, or the fact that the screen was so much bigger than what she was use to, making some scenes scary for her. The movie started off lighthearted and fun, but soon had a mystery that needed to be solved with some interesting characters along the way. To be completely honest, even I was thrown for a loop and totally did not expect the outcome! Would I recommend Zootopia as a family movie? Of course! I don’t want to give away the plot but it definitely gets the hamsters running in your brain and makes you think about all the possibilities of the outcome.
The Verdict
By the end of the movie my 3 year old was no longer scared and was excited to come back to the theater. She has been asking every day after school when she can go to the movies again. Find out more about the Fandango app and Zootopia.

we really want to see this movie but I know my daughter isn’t ready for a regular theater. I hope this comes out on our local drive-in though!

I’m sure it depends on each child, but the sound can be difficult on older people, too. And the allover effect with the huge screen, etc., can really add up.

I think new parents think their young children are ready for the movies and don’t use common sense. For your kids to see a Disney movie, that is great! But I see parents taking young children to movies rated PG or R and it is too much for them. I would keep young children out of the movie theaters period if I had my say. The Dolby sound is also too loud for them. We took our children when they were young to Disney movies or musicals now we take our grandchildren but the toddlers stay home.

We started taking our daughter when she was 2, but it really depends on how well they are in public.

This movie looks adorable! I have a 6 year old and a 19 month old, both girls, and both so different personality wise. My oldest, we took to the movies starting at 4 since we were a bit worried how she’d do. She’s the mellow one compared to the youngest. I know the little one will need more time than the first, lol she can’t sit still and is so loud. They’re complete opposites.

I really want to see this movie and I’m so glad the trip to the movies worked for you and both of your girls! I think it depends on the movie and the child. The main thing I would be worried about would be the sound! Every time I go to the movies after a long hiatus, it just amazes me how loud the sound is! It even bothered my mother! I think your 3 year old did great!
